Original Score, Ahoy!

Mon Sep 24, 2007, 8:23 PM
You may have noticed a re-uploading of the film. We've finally gotten a decent preloader and a good flash version of the film up for your viewing enjoyment.

The real news is, our music has changed! We now have the original score composed by David Stanton of USC and a newly rendered version of the film to match. We're excited, and we hope to get this out into film festivals around the animation nation. The portfolio show was a great success, and we thank everyone who's been following our progress and supporting our efforts. This is only the beginning!

Portfolio Show Time!

Sat Sep 8, 2007, 6:12 PM
Fall is on the way, and so is the Art Institute's graduate Portfolio Show! If you are in the area and would like to meet the cast and crew of Scalawags, we will have a booth where the film will be playing.
We've been working long after the first production release of the animation, and we now have a beautful art book that will be on display at the portfolio show along with never-before-seen maquette work.

It's all going down at Joe's Garage in Irvine on Wednesday, September 19th from 1-3 pm. It's open to the public, and you may come and go as you please. So bring a friend, pile into the car, and head on over to see the amazing work of the collective body of gradauting Ai students. We hope to see you there!

Scalawags is Here!

Fri Jan 26, 2007, 1:58 AM
It has been a long time coming, with many late nights and short tempers all around, but here it is. We are proud to finally announce the premiere of Scalawags here on DeviantART. We appreciate those of you who have been with us from the start, watching our progress and giving us valuable feedback as we've produced this animation. And for those of you who are new to our page, we welcome you and hope that you enjoy the film!

***PRODUCTION NOTES***

We have received a number of questions regarding the programs and techniques that we used in making the film, and it is our pleasure to give you an insider's look into the making of this animation.

19 Art Institute students sat down in the 2d Animation Studio class on October 2nd last fall. For the next 11 weeks, we worked endlessly on production until it's completion and final presentation in class on the last week.

º There were 7 departments in all: Story, Character, Background, Audio, Animation, Compositing, and Titles.

º All of our animation was hand-drawn using a combination of old-fashioned technique with light tables and the more modern Macromedia Flash. All cleanup animation was done with the use of a wacom tablet.

º Animation was created at 30 frames per second.

º Openning sequence was created in Maya 8.0 and Combustion; animation was created and exported from Flash 8; backgrounds were painted in Photoshop CS; all elements were composited in After Effects 7.0; audio was mixed and exported from Audition 2.0.

º We used SPRITES and LENS FLARES. *ooh, aaaaah. . .*

º We consumed 4 large pizzas in less than 10 minutes on premiere day.

This is only the beginning. While Scalawags is done for the moment, it is not a closed book. This is, in essence, a "rough cut" of the film as it was envisioned from the start, and we intend to continue working on this piece until it is polished to completion. And to end on an excited note: there is currently work underway from the talented music majors over at USC, who are producing an original score for Scalawags. AWESOMENESS.
Thank you again, all of you who have paid us a visit. Enjoy the art that is animation!

Scalawagin' It Up

Fri Jan 19, 2007, 3:14 PM
Please bear with us over the next few days while we upload a galley's worth of new and old artwork to the gallery and scraps. We've appreciated everyone who's been following the progress of our animation, as well as your patience in waiting for the finished film. We've had some minor setbacks along the way to getting it up here, but rest assured the film's premiere is right around the corner. So sit back, relax, and get ready to enjoy the show!
